Have you ever woken up and thought the last thing you want is to get up and go to work?
I know for a fact, that we have all felt that “duvet day” feeling. It’s when you just can’t seem to gather the strength from within, to get up, get going, and would prefer to to turn off the alarm, turn over and go back to sleep.
When people feel like this, some will call in sick, even if they’re not just so they can take the day off. I know when people take a day off sick when they're not, they almost end up feeling guilty, staying in, hiding from anyone they may know rather than having a duvet day where they wake up when they want, and do what they want.
Taking a sick day because you're feeling burnt out or feeling overwhelmed or just because your weekend went too fast could be detrimental to your job.
At Nunya Digital a duvet day is one of a number of days that an employee can take off without notice in advance. So we are introducing 8 duvet days a year. We can take 2 every quarter and all you have to do is text the manager ‘Hey, it's a duvet day’ and that is it! These days are built into our annual holiday days and can be taken whenever we want a day off, but aren't sick and haven't already asked for annual leave.
I think It's odd that more companies don't offer duvet days. Some companies believe this can make their staff lazy or have a lack of responsibility which I find absurd. These are close minded companies. The type of company who makes you feel bad for requesting a holiday, taking the full hour you’re entitled to for your lunch or being sick and needing a sick day!
Trusting your employees is something that is not very common. At Nunya Digital we know If you can trust your staff with your business, you should be able to trust them enough to know if they need a day off of work for themselves.
Duvet days can be an attractive benefit to both employees and companies. Adding this perk to Nunya’s company’s benefits package has enticed employees to come and work for us and also stay working for us for longer. If your industry is particularly competitive, high stress or long hours then this may just be the kind of incentive that will draw potential staff to come and work for you.
We not only believe, but know that duvet days will actually enhance productivity. I know I feel like I'm being treated with respect and trust. Since being allowed to decide if I don't want to work a certain day, rather than having to call in and make excuses and try to justify the need for a day off all i have to do is text and it just works. I feel heard, happy and important enough to be given responsibility over myself at work.
I know from past experiences that feeling burnt out even in a job that you love will kill your career. I have one piece of advice from me to you. Find a company who understands burnouts and mental health. Nunya Digital knows its employees, it doesn't wait for their staff to come to them, we have constant check-ins. As we all know by now a burnout describes a major stress condition that leads to drastic physical, mental, and emotional exhaustion which is a lot worse than ordinary fatigue. A burnout makes it challenging for people to even cope with doing the small things let alone working to your fullest potential daily. Your new 100% now, looks the same as your old 50%.
People experiencing a burnout often feel like they have nothing left to give and more often than not, dread getting out of bed each morning. When I had a burnout I adopted an angry, resentful outlook toward life and felt hopeless. The hardest part to admit is that this won't go away on its own, and if left untreated or identified, it can lead to serious physical and psychological illnesses like depression, heart disease, and even diabetes!!
So even though your company may not offer you a duvet day you need to find one like Nunya Digital who respects you enough to let you breathe. You work hard enough, long enough and are good enough to know that, just because you love your job doesn't mean you can't get tired, can't get burnt out or can't get excited for time off.
So find your happy medium, a place who will understand you and your needs rather than having a one size fits all approach… which by this day and age, they should know doesn’t work.
